First i will say though, this thing gets hot and it gets hot fast! I was honestly not prepared for that coming from the other conventional heating methods. I just set it to high like i usually did before and my cast iron pan was smoking in no time.
The cooktop is easy to use, just place your pan or pot on it, hit the power button and then the mode button after, from there you select your power level. After figuring it out, i never had a need to go above 1200W, it honestly just got too hot to do anything useful and would overheat the plate with my cast iron skillet. If you take your pan off while cooking then you will be treated with a very loud and constant beeping to let you know you took your pan off. I could do without this feature but i get why its there, once you return it though it stops instantly. I will say, if you leave a pan on it empty for a while, it will overheat the system pretty fast. It's not much of an issue when actually cooking but it will throw an error code at you and start beeping again.
The pot included is nothing fancy but it comes with a lid and it works. At least if you find yourself in a situation where your pans don't work, you will still have something to use on it.
Anyway, i would go for the programmed version just so i could set temps but i don't think it makes a huge difference. The unit looks great and works as expected, it also takes up little counter space and can be stored shortly after use since it cools down quickly.
The instruction pamphlet was clear and well written. We cleaned all three pieces with a sponge and mild dish soap, rinsed the pieces (pan, lid, and top surface of cooking unit) and tested the system with the metal pan 1/2 filled with tap water. It was the first time we had seen an induction cooker in operation - and it took a few minutes for us to grasp what was happening, watching the water in the pan begin to boil in a short time when compared with our installed home propane stove.
I checked my wife's professional cooking pans (many sizes) with a strong magnet to be sure they would operate correctly, and all were found to attract the magnet.
My wife tested her largest pan the next day, simmering spices in coconut oil until they were a light brown, added pork chops and the glass lid, and
fiddled with the power until she had the perfect temperature to cook the chops. Some 8 minuets later she added sliced mixed vegetables into the same pan and cooked them as the chops finished. She estimated that it took 12 minuets or so less than using the gas stovetop to cook the same meal.
The glass cooktop remains hot for awhile after you remove your pan or pot. The cooktop surface is easy to wipe clean when cool, after each use.
Some safety notes: 1. Make sure that all of the power cord stays behind the cooktop so it will not get tangled in your cooking implements, which might unexpectedly move the cooktop and pan. 2. Do not use the cooktop on top of a propane or natural gas stove. 3. Do not leave the cooktop unattended while cooking until you are confident that you understand how quickly the unit can cook; the various power levels and your cooking style will need to be experienced for you to become efficient. Just like you must gain experience if you switch from a gas stove to an electric stove, and visa-versa.
Why not 5 stars?
Timer: the time control starts at 30 minutes and you can only add minutes. So, to pressure cook hard boiled eggs for 7 minutes, I have to roll it all the way up to 60 to start over. If you miss it, go all the way around the clock again...really annoying that I can not subtract one minute.
Temp: The temperature regulation is sub par...My pan will periodically boil when set at 150 degrees F and controls only let user selections in 50 degree increments. 10 degree discrimination would be MUCH better if coupled with a more accurate sensor. This is the biggest reason for deduction a star.
Wattage: It would be very nice to have increments of 100 W rather than 300, 500, 700, 1000, 1200, 1400 and 1800 being your only options.
Overall, this is a very sturdy unit and easy to use. The pan that comes with it (which I consider to be a free bonus) is thin and flimsy. I did not expect to get a premium pan at this price, but it works to boil water, and the lid is nice.
