The Setup: Very easy! Everything was so intuitive. The only thing you need is a philips screw driver to fasten the screws to make the frame super secure.
The Quality: very good! we've used it agrressively for 2 weeks now and noothing is ripping/tearing or coming apart.
Dismantling: Very easy! The piano can be removed or position changed within a few seconds by loosening the large red knobs on either side.
Best things: Easy set up - took me like 3-4 minutes after unboxing, lots of things to keep your baby interacting and visually and auditorily stimulated
One last thing! Our baby just turned for the first time on this mat! Today! While I was writing this review! You can tell I really like this product! Take my review with a grain of salt, as our child's development in the last few weeks may very well be independent of this product. But who know, maybe it helped her turn over today and perhaps it will be responsible for making her a musical genius in the years to come.
As expected, she loves it! She can sit and flail her legs for a good 20-30 minutes before getting tired, and the dangling toys keep her entertained after that. Her favorites are the crinkly cellophane zebra, which we often detach from the arch for her to play with elsewhere, and the elephant cymbal loop, which she always has one hand on while playing. She shows a little interest in the rattling plastic frog ball for now, and zero interest in the blue soft chewable(?) hippo thing.
At this point, my only main gripe with it is that the loops the toys hang on are too small to swap out other toys with a similar type of attachment. I've got a butterfly with crinkly wings from her infant seat that has the larger nub on the top part of the ring, and for the life of me I can't fit it through the loop to hang from this arch.
It took a bit of a vacation from the daily rotation when she was first learning to roll over, because she'd repeatedly try to roll over onto her stomach and get stuck against one of the sides of the arch. This was pretty upsetting to her. As she gets a bit better at this, it's making a reappearance since she still loves to kick and bat at the hanging toys.
Note: Ours ended up being slightly defective: one of the loops holding the mat to the plastic frame had been installed a full two inches off where it should have been and was impossible to get into the slot. We sent in a note to Fisher Price about it, hoping to get a replacement mat, and they sent us an entire second gym for free right away. The mat actually works fine apart from that one loop so by the time it arrived we decided we didn't really want to open up a box (with how securely the pieces are attached to the box you kinda have to demolish it to get anything out) just to get a new mat that may have the same problem, and we'd just donate the free one they sent.
What I love about this product:
- There are two volume levels and two different music settings. If loud music drives you crazy, then the lowest setting is perfect; it is loud enough for baby to hear and enjoy without annoying mom or dad. If you aren't driven to madness by sing-song, the loudest setting is not deafening or terribly annoying. The first music setting allows for a change in song each time the child kicks the keyboard. The second setting will play the song in its entirety before going to the next, regardless of if the child kicks the keyboard halfway through.
- Once assembled, it is easy to move around from room to room and is sturdy! My son kicks the piano really hard and while he may move himself up slightly while doing so, all of the pieces of the product stay in place and continue to perform as intended.
- Swapping out the toys is quick and easy. I try to rotate the toys every so often and it is simple to remove one and replace with another without fumbling.
- Finally, it is decently compact. I can fold the upper portion of the mat down towards the keyboard and place it in the corner of the living room, and it doesn't take up an absurd amount of space. I would say the second activity mat that we own is twice the size of the piano gym.
Overall, I would recommend this to anyone who is looking to give there child some fun, independent play time with some exercise added in. If your child responds well to music, I would especially recommend this product.
