Minor update: I have discovered an anomaly. The instructions that are given to alter the position of the hands if they are not spot on the noon hour is to push 2 buttons and the hands are supposed to stop as close to the 12 as possible, from which point you correct if necessary. The FIRST Time I did it, it worked exactly in this manner.
I also like the luminescence of the numbers in the dark but the closer (in time) they are to a dose of strong light, of course they work better. The light button which illuminates the watch for about 3 seconds is very strong by itself, but you can not tell the date and day, only the time.
The manual is looooooooong or to put it another way, complete. This watch has so many features I still have yet to go through them all, but it is not necessary. If you do not wish to use universal time, or 24 hour clock vs 12 h , or set the alarm (s) or locate the best location for the auto atomic update to work best, etc, etc, you don't have to. I simply use the watch to tell me what day it is and what time it is and to reset my computer's clock which I have hooked up to the cesium clock at the VP's house.
One more thing. If you are wearing anything that has even a small magnet attached to it, keep it far from the watch. That , among various other things, can keep the atomic signal (which comes from somewhere in Colorado) to not work well. But so can the ionosphere, although that does not seem to be much of a problem, nor does weather, although they suggest it can. I suppose lightening storms can throw it for a loop too.
I am very happy I bought this especially at AMAZON, because right now the Kmart price (originally $159.00) is on sale for $138, which with a coupon you can get it for $108. Amazon, during X-Mas sold it to me for around $80!
AND they stand behind it! Amazon is a really cool outfit and I am happy to write this review. And I don't get any discount or even a dime out of this. I am not even recognized as a frequent contributor or whatever they call those guys who DO get some kind of discount. Heck, I could sell these watches with my eyes closed, I like them so much!
+++++++++++++++++++++
About the link size. Casio has a more expensive atomic watch that came out in 2013 where I read they had trouble with the linkage sizing BECAUSE Casio never included a tool to do it yourself. THISI WATCH I believe to be even better than the earlier model for less money AND THEY DID include a tool for do-it-yourself link sizing. At first it looked complex but it ended up being fun! It is so easy to put the tool in the ONE HOLE and press! There goes a link. And when you want to re attach the remaining chain to its other end, you simply visually align the links and SNAP(!) you are done!. It is so easy, if you make it too small by one link, you easily snap it back into place. NOTHING COULD BE SIMPLER and thank Casio for including the link removal tool! Oh yes, compared to that other more expensive watch, these instructions are NOT IN JAPANESE! They are in English as well as other languages. SO don't be intimidated by the size of the instruction manual because it includes other languages besides English thereby making it appear 3 times its size.
ANd of course it is waterproof to something like 130 feet I believe, so occasional splashing won't bother it one bit!
Back again...
I tried to experiment by turning the receive signal mode off and comparing it to one where the signal would come in 6 times a day. (By the way, that signal, which corrects the watch if it is less than .001 seconds off will only keep coming in until the watch indicates "Signal received" Then for the rest of the day the signals are turned off until tomorrow). I wanted to see how accurate the watch was on its own! I did this for 7 days and I could not see any difference between the two watches. I then noticed in the specifications that it is correct to +/- 15 seconds a month! So my one week experiment at best would have been off by 3 1/2 seconds. That should have been something I could see, but in those 7 days there was no change at all. The second hands struck each tick exactly the same.
As to the guy who flew to Paris and could not set his watch, all the functions, like "beep when you press a button" or beep when one of 5 alarms goes off" or Beep on the hour" or receiving the Colorado time adjust signal, or turn on World time clock...etc etc etc.: Every single function can be turned off if you desire. So the guy in Paris could have simply set his watch to the time he wanted it to be , turned off the signal receive function, and would have been good to go.
The watch signal update does NOT require sunshine. It updates at night so the individual who thought holding the watch up to the sun would speed the signal did not read the info. The watch has a power gauge which indicates how much power remains and which applications will work depending on the remaining power in the battery. Once the power is at a given level no more sunlight (or any light for that matter) is required for the watch to go through its various applications for a four month period sans any light. And did I state I thought it quite handsome. The crowns are not your typical shape but blend in with the sweep of the crystal encasement.
I lent my watch to my dad today, and he was so impressed he asked me to find him one. With the price down to $85 I'm glad I now have an excuse to buy another one. That's what led me here and I thought I'd just add a few words to my review. I still love this watch and hope they keep making them or something very similar for the day it finally fails. I wear it all day, every day, rain, shine, working in the shop or hiking a 14er. If you're looking at this watch and don't yet own one, push the button and order the thing.
Update, 10 Dec 2015:
Now it has been 16 months and I still really like this watch! No issues, keeps perfect time. And with the current price of $90, I don't think you can beat it for value, assuming of course that you like this style of timepiece. If you do, buy it!
Update, 1 May 2015:
It has been almost 9 months now and the watch is running great and keeping perfect time. I wear it during almost all waking hours, and it's very comfortable. I've grown accustomed to it's slightly larger face than watches I've worn previously... in fact, I like it better now that I'm used to it, as it seems very balanced.
I notice the price of the watch is up about 35% from when I bought it last year. I'm not sure whats up with that, but I do believe this is my favorite of the watches I've owned and I'd spend the $160 they want now if I needed one.
Original review from 7 August 2014:
This is my second Casio Wave Ceptor type watch. The first lasted about 5 years including one battery change, but it recently gave up the ghost and found its way into the trash. I really liked the fact that it never needed to be tweaked to keep the exact time, so when it stopped working I started looking again at what watches are out there that sync time with the Ft Collins, CO time broadcast. I've always been a fan of self-setting time pieces: I have four variations of clocks in the house that set themselves to this time source as well.
After a couple of hours of research, the WVA-M640D-1ACR worked its way to the top of my list and I ordered it. I am partial to analog time display and stainless segmented bands -- pretty much the look of this watch -- so this one fit the bill nicely. I've only had it a couple of weeks so I don't know how well it'll hold up, but I can offer a few comments about it, and a little comparison to my previous Wave Ceptor.
First, it has a larger dial than I anticipated. Now that I look more closely at the photo of it, I can see that it's a little larger around than my previous watch, but it's not overly large. It's also thinner, so even though it's larger around, it stays nicely in place and fits well. In addition, it's lighter. This also helps to keep it from flopping around on my wrist, so overall, I like the size and configuration. It could be just a tad smaller in diameter for me, but that may be because I'm used to my previous watch.
Part of what makes it lighter is obviously the construction. My previous watch was all metal... this one has a stainless covered plastic frame. Time will tell how this holds up, but it seems to be sturdy enough. The only thing I don't care for about this is that there is a small amount of grey plastic that shows between the front stainless cover and the stainless band. This makes it look a little "cheap" I think, but it's not a predominant feature and the grey tends to blend fairly well with the metal.
Compensating for that little bit of plastic, I think, is the face of the watch which I find very attractive. The face color in the photo looks black, but in fact it's a bronze / metallic brown color, which looks really nice. Also under the crystal is a black ring around the dial with small numbers and 60 minute/second markers, and finally around the perimeter of the face on the watch housing are the five minute/second increment numbers and markers that you see in the photo.
An improvement over the previous watch is the digital display at the bottom of the face that now provides information large enough to actually see without my Walmart 1.75 magnifiers on. You can set this display to show various info; I like having the day of the week (e.g., TH) and the day of the month (e.g., 7).
The watch has a bunch of modes for alarms, stop watch, countdown, etc; but those are features that are of minimal interest to me since I pretty much just want to know what time it is. It was easy to set up... just had to tell it my time zone and what I wanted to do about daylight savings time. It immediately adjusted itself to the correct time. That's another improvement over the previous version: it used to be that when I flew somewhere that was an earlier time zone and informed my watch, the analog hands would go forward even if it meant going 11 hours forward to get to a time display of an hour earlier. This one moves the hands either forward or back, whatever is the fastest way to get to the right time. So going back an hour was quick and painless.
One more nice thing: this watch has a solar charging feature that my previous model did not. So the chore of opening the watch, albeit infrequently, to change out a battery and hope you don't break anything while inside the case is history... this thing should keep on recharging and running until it finally dies.
Overall, I am very happy with the watch and, assuming this is the style for you, I highly recommend it. Getting 5 years out of a $100 watch that is otherwise a constant source of perfect time works for me, so hopefully this one lasts at least as long.
