Neato makes the best, most thorough robot vacs in the world, and I’ve had several. Now, they can get temperamental later in life, but they still clean like nobody’s business and are a lot cheaper than hiring a housekeeper. And each new model gets quieter and more reliable. My Botvac D80 is the quietest yet. I’ve tried other brands, but Neatos get more fur and dirt by far and are the easiest to clean by FAR. I have 5 cats and a Border Collie so - just imagine.

This is my fourth Botvac. They do a great job cleaning when they work correctly. I recently bought two and one of them will not return to base. It’s pretty much a guarantee that you will have some sort of issue with it within the first couple of years.

The Neato Botvac 80 for the most part runs very well on its own. Its pattern of operation is to circumnavigate the room it is in and then proceed to move up and down methodically within the pattern it laid out. At times it may seem confused and retrace its path or stop and say that it is reviewing its surroundings when it is in the middle of a room with no furniture. If left alone it will eventually get up its courage to proceed on its own. It is pretty self reliable while in operation. If it runs into a problem such as trapped behind a piece of furniture it can't figure out how to extricate itself or the dust bin is full, it will beep and let you know. For that reason I prefer to stay nearby reading a book when it is cleaning. When it is finished cleaning, it will head straight to the charger and position itself for recharging. The charger should be against the wall with 3 or so feet of clearance on either side. The Botvac should begin its operation from its charging position so that it will know its way back when finished. This is a good time to remove the dust bin and clean it out so it is ready to go the next time. The down side is that the dust bin is fairly small and sometimes must be emptied before the Botvac is finished. Also, the HEPA filter is pretty hard to clean - a small paint brush is helpful.Read full review

Neato or Roomba? which one? Well, its your choice. What's important is that you can now get parts for Neato vacs, which means you can keep them working for a long time. Plus, the price is now competitive with Roomba. Roomba's zip across the floor in a helter-skelter fashion, Neato is slower and plods along in a straight line. Roomba will get its business done in about an hour, whereas Neato may go back a recharge a few times to get the job done. It's a matter of personal preference as to which one you prefer. That being said, the Botvac does a nice job. This is my second, and both do the job of picking up dirt and debris, doing the vacuuming so I don't have to.
