Upgraded..many improvements..some deficits
I upgraded to the Garmin nuvi 2595LMT from my old nuvi 350. I wanted a GPS that would do most of what one installed in a new car would do, thereby eliminating the need to spend an extra $2,000 when I purchase a new car. I particularly like the voice command feature and the option of selecting from a couple of routes (which apparently can only be accessed from the touch screen, not via voice command). It is unfortunate that I haven't been able to pair my new nuvi with my Droid 2 Global phone. I'm hoping that either there will be a Garmin software upgrade that will accept more phone models, or that my next phone can be paired.Yesterday I took a 2-hr round-trip using my new nuvi. I was surprised that, even though I had set it to sleep after 2 minutes of inactivity, it never did go to sleep and the battery ran low by the end of the trip. The battery indicator is only visible on the home screen and, therefore, I didn't know it was low until a voice told me so. If my trip had been longer I would have had to pull over to connect the nuvi to the power source. I contacted support and was told that this nuvi doesn't go to sleep while the car is in motion; this feature works only when the car is stopped. How inefficient and hard on battery life! It is not necessary to have a visible screen when driving on the same stretch of road for 20 miles. My old nuvi went to sleep at times like that and woke up at the next direction command, thereby saving battery life, so I view this "upgrade" as a step backward. Since I usually only use the GPS for longish trips, I will always have to keep it plugged in when using it. I don't like having to deal with the wire from the nuvi to the plug-in on a regular basis. Fortunately, I use a vent mount and the wire to the power source will be short. But if I mount it on the windshield, or even the dashboard, the wire could get in the way, not to mention being obvious to possible thieves. I wonder if I can make it sleep manually by pressing the power button - I'll try that during my next trip.My new nuvi and I are still becoming acquainted and, even though I find the lack of the sleep feature to be annoying, I will adapt. I look forward to using the split screen lane and signage feature on high traffic highways, as well as the real time traffic information in city areas.Update Sept. 2013:I have obviously learned a lot in the proper use of this nuvi and love it! It was just a matter of getting used to the differences from my older nuvi. I learned that the reason it needs to be plugged in to make use of the real time feature, which I like very much, is that there is an antenna in the cord. I now just automatically plug it in each time I use it - no problem. It has been very helpful on trips to city areas, letting me know if there is traffic congestion ahead, showing me which lane I need to be in, etc. I actually like this nuvi better than the navigation system in my son's BMW! I have since upgraded my cell phone to a Samsung Galaxy III and had no trouble pairing it to the nuvi.
